Hello friends.  Welcome to this installment of Better Than Good and Improving™.

TSOT 003 – Do you say Thank You on the highway?

The following story repeated itself for me just a few days ago as I entered I-77 South in Davidson, North Carolina on my way home from my day job.

Today I share a simple highway happening that we all have experienced. Instead of road rage and injury, a simple unwritten rule of the road makes life easier and, most importantly, safer through the simplest of gestures.

I hope you relate!

In this case, I was entering the highway when a panel van held back and flashed their headlights to let me merge.

As I could not flash my brake lights like trailer lights, I threw up my hand to say I was grateful.

I said thanks.

Here’s a full short story about the same thing.

A Short Story of Thanks

In the middle of the night—on a U.S. interstate, the M1 in the UK, or the Autobahn in Germany—you’re passed by a big rig.

An 18-wheeler. A lorry. A truck and tractor.

What do you do?

You flash your headlights—bright, then back to low—once or twice.

A simple signal:

You’re clear. Come on over.

Then it happens.

The driver flashes their trailer lights back at you.

Why?

It’s one of those unwritten codes.

A quiet, professional way of saying:

Thank you.

No words. No noise.

Just mutual respect between people who may never meet.

These are men and women who keep the world moving—delivering everything from a family’s furniture to the food on your table tonight, and everything in between.

And yet, they still take a moment to acknowledge a simple courtesy.

The lesson is just as simple.

The next time someone shows you a small kindness—return it.

Say thank you.

It matters more than you think.

Act accordingly.

Respect → Gratitude → Leadership
