Vol 3 # 2-New Year – New Perspectives or Same Old Stuff?
Hello friends. Welcome to this installment of Better Than Good and Improving™.
As we begin 2025, I would like to offer a different perspective than the usual conversation / supposed encouragement, which in reality is nothing more than prodding and salesmanship meant to stir you to action to invest in the bidder’s book or podcast or newest and greatest facility to make you a better you in 2025. Sound familiar? Are you tired of it? Is it your fault that, depending on the writer, 75%-90% of all new year resolutions fail in 20 to 90 days. Do you really care about those statistics and whoever the purveyor of goods and services is, because the statistics never move and neither of us wants you to be a statistic.
How’s that for starting you off in an uplifted mood?
I started on this vein, because I wanted to get you thinking about why these facts are true, irrespective of the seller, the message, or the product they offer. In my opinion, the answer surrounds change. In science there is a concept called homeostasis. Newton’s 1st law, also called the Law of Inertia, states that a body in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an external force. If the amount of motion is zero, or the body is at rest, the body will stay at rest unless acted upon by an external force. The second law speaks to what happens when that external force is applied to a body; it accelerates. The formula is F = m * a, where F is the amount of force, m is the mass and a is the acceleration.
Let’s take this process to the human mind and body and see how that affects our desires to change and become someone or something different from what we are. Overly simplifying, your mind, body, and even soul, innately wants to stay just like they are. Therefore, to cause the acceleration needed for F = m * a to remain true and given the mass of your mind, body and soul are huge, it takes a great deal mind power to provide the necessary force to cause an appreciable change.
The result is no matter how hard we try, or think we are trying, we ultimately get the definition of insanity, if you keep on doing what you’ve always done, you’ll always have, what you’ve always had, regardless of who it was that made that statement, Einstein or Josephus or someone between the two!
Point is, we need to recognize that the intention of our inertia is to keep us where we are and our desires are to be somewhere else. So how do we deal with it? I will refer you back to Volume 2 # 1, where I discussed the need to give ourselves grace. At the same time, let’s not make excuses. The fact is, we are fighting Newton’s law; inertia. And just like the first spaceship that had to build up enough energy and speed to break earth’s orbit and head to the moon, we must break our own inertia to be able to make that change that we desire.
Therefore, analyze what it will take to break your inertia AKA momentum, and take the next step on your journey to success! Thanks for allowing me to journey with you for these last few minutes.
Thanks for stopping by on your way to Better Than Good and Improving™.
